MooShu Monday: throwing the discus

MooShu is quite good at fetch. In fact, he's better than any other dog I ever had, even dogs with retriever blood in them!

He has a tiny little tennis ball and, after fetching it, lays it down at my feet to throw it again. If I don't pick it up, he'll pick it up and toss it at me. Slowly he learned that picking something up and tossing it can be a game he can play by himself.

So here's MooShu with an acorn that turns out to make a very nice substitute for a discus.

(Oh, and if you look carefully, you'll see the absolute first appearance of Contrariwise (me!) in this blog.)

Very cute video. MooShu seems to be a true joy to your family.

I would advise you not to let MooShu play with acorns though. He could accidentally swallow one or just plain eat it. Last year one of my dogs (my favorite) swallowed an whole acorn without anyone knowing it. Unknown to us, it was lodged in her intestines, almost causing it to perforate. There were no immediate signs that anything serious was wrong. By the time we noticed, she went through a very expensive surgery and a horrible 9 hours in the Animal E.R. before she finally died.

Sorry to be so negative, and I'm truly not trying to be bossy. But anytime I hear of an animal that plays with or eats acorns, I tell this story to prevent this from happening to another animal.

No, I appreciate what you are saying.

We had a similar experience with another dog of ours. He liked to escape from our yard. One time, a day after he had escaped for a short period of time, he was not himself. He seemed in pain and we also noted that he couldn't "relieve" himself.

We took him to the vet. After $1200 of tests and surgery, it turned out that he had found a delectable peach pit which lodged in his intestines.

Luckily, he recovered and he's still around, living with my son.

We really worry about MooShu because he seems to treat the deck as a potential smorgasbord. We keep an eye on him to make sure that he doesn't chew or swallow any little objects.
